"Standing Guard for Rich and Famous" - Boston Globe (02/25/07) ; Baker, Billy

There are more than a half-dozen security companies in Boston that specialize in executive protection. In contrast to the beefy, imposing looking bodyguards that typically protect celebrities, executive protection specialists operate more subtly to protect their clients, blending in with their surroundings like the Secret Service. "I've turned down a number of celebrities who want a big guy so they can look good...That's not what we're about," says one member of the industry. The typical client of an executive protection firm is either extremely wealthy or maintains a high-profile, but these companies also do brisk business helping to protect VIPs who visit the city, including celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld, dignitaries like former President George H.W. Bush, and sports stars like Tiger Woods. Normally, these VIPs have their own security teams but the executive protection firms are added on a contract basis due to their knowledge of the area. Other clients include heirs and heiresses who attend local private schools and universities, and rich clients from the Middle East who visit Boston to use its hospitals. Members of the city's executive protection industry say that CEO protection is one of the hottest areas of the business. Industry insiders say that executive protection focuses not just on preventing physical dangers, but on preventing embarrassing incidents.
